Overview
A wig is the fastest way to a full head of hair — and the easiest product to buy badly. Cap construction and hair origin decide almost everything about how the wig looks and how long it lasts.
This course covers hair grades, cap types, measuring your head correctly, and the care routine that keeps a human hair wig wearable for a year or more.
What you will learn
- Tell remy human hair from processed and synthetic fibre
- Choose between full lace, lace front, mono top and machine-made caps
- Measure your head and order the correct cap size
- Wash, condition and store a wig without causing tangling
Lessons
- Lesson 1
Human, remy and synthetic hair
8 minWhat you are actually paying for.
Remy human hair keeps cuticles aligned in one direction, which is why it resists tangling and can be heat-styled. Non-remy human hair is cheaper but mats faster.
Heat-friendly synthetic holds style well in humidity and costs far less, but has a shorter life and a characteristic sheen under flash photography.
- Lesson 2
Cap construction
9 minFull lace, lace front, mono top, machine wefted.
Full lace allows parting anywhere and updos, at the highest price and lowest durability.
Lace front gives a realistic hairline with a sturdier back — the best value for most buyers.
Machine-wefted caps are durable and affordable but the parting is fixed.
- Lesson 3
Measuring and fit
6 minCircumference, front-to-nape and ear-to-ear.
Measure circumference around the hairline, then front-to-nape and ear-to-ear over the top. Average adult circumference is 21.5–22.5 inches.
A cap that is too tight causes headaches; too loose and adjustable straps distort the hairline.

Washing, styling and storage
8 minThe routine that adds months of life.
Wash every 8–12 wears with sulphate-free shampoo, always downward, never circular.
Air dry on a stand. Keep heat tools under 160°C on human hair and avoid heat entirely on standard synthetic.
FAQs
- How long does a human hair wig last?
- With correct care, 8–18 months of regular wear for remy human hair and 4–6 months for synthetic.
- Can I colour a human hair wig?
- Darker shades yes, by a professional. Lifting colour lighter usually damages the hair because it has already been processed.
